What is Sand Etching?

Etching is a process where an abrasive material like sand is blown at the product using compressed air. The abrasive material carves the design through the mask material while all other surfaces of the product are protected.

The labor intensive part of the process is hand applying a mask to the entire item, then removing the mask and cleaning the item after the etching process. The end result is a frosted appearance.

If color fill is desired, this step would occur before the mask is removed. Optional color fill is also available in a variety of colors.

Interesting Tip. The type of sand varies, amount of pressure and time depends on the material and level of detail. For example, fine sand is used on glass to achieve fine details, whereas, coarser sand is used on bricks, stones and concrete benches due to the hardness of the material and deeper etching.
